WOV Mirrabooka 2020/21
Due to Covid restrictions our Launch was held in November 2020. The launch was funded
by Neami National (Mental Health Service). There were over 100 attendees including choir
members. It was launched by our local MP Janine Freeman (who contributed $500) and
the Executive Director Ros Elmes of Mental Health, Public Health and Dental Services who
committed $2000, in addition to a previous contribution of $2,000 to support WOVMirrabooka
members going through COVID. Ros’s speech focussed on the benefits of singing, community
inclusion and mental health.
On commencement we did have 76 members, and this was disrupted by COVID 19. During
COVID restrictions, the main task was to break isolation and establish links with members
and their families, hence, WOVMirrabooka continued its connections via Zoom, which was
encouraged by our Musical Director. This generated lots of fun and laughter as members
were asked to wear silly hats and participated in a music quiz, shared personal stories and
just connecting with each other.
WOVMirrabooka had the opportunity to perform at several community local events including
Harmony Week, Mirrabooka Community Markets, NAIDOC week and Christmas. WOVM was
also promoted on radio talk shows and most recently the ABC News. We are hopeful this
exposure will help raise our profile and increase corporate sponsorship and membership.
