SKILLED Job Opportunities

At Creativity Australia, we committed to making a difference in people’s lives by helping connect choir participants with services they need to get a hand up. To this end, we’re pleased to announce a partnership with SKILLED.

SKILLED is recruiting Customer Service staff to work at the Royal Melbourne Show, which operates from 21 September until 2 October 2013. The first priority of successful Customer Service staff is to ensure Show patrons thoroughly enjoy their visit to the Royal Melbourne Show. This is achieved by providing an excellent level of customer service including proactively greeting or assisting people as they enter or exit the Showgrounds, scanning tickets and providing information and directions. Customer Service staff work at gates and in booths located throughout the Showgrounds and are required to stand on their feet for long hours whilst working with a high volume of people.

I’d like to teach the world to sing

TOH_03_2010 13

“Since ancient times people have invested significant time and effort to create music. Today people spend enormous amounts of time and money to engage with music in all sorts of ways. Music is always around us. It makes our lives complete. Everyone can express one’s emotion with music and everyone is born with one instrument: a voice to sing. So why does music, and especially singing, hold such potentially enormous intrinsic value? And since singing is an innate ability, how does it affect us?

The simple explanation is that music and singing brings a unique pleasure to humans. Of course, that still leaves the question of why. And for that, neuroscience is starting to provide some answers.

Singing is primitive and tribal. Before written language emerged, critical stories were passed on with the oral tradition of song. The Hebrew Torah and the Greek myths of the Iliad and the Odyssey, were all sung long before they were first written down. When we sing, we tap into something that is not only one of the most ancient of human practices, but we also tap into the activity that modern neuroscience is showing to be profoundly healthy.”‘

Climb Every Mountain

It’s 60 years today since Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the top of Mount Everest… and we have our very own Everest mountaineer amongst Melbourne Sings!

A few weeks ago Melbourne Sings farewelled Bec by singing Climb Every Mountain (click here to watch) from The Sound of Music. She’s now back safe and sound with lots of stories to share!

“If I had anything to describe the experience, it would be that out of the 15 people in the group, four got helicoptered out. And, this photo tells a little lie – out of a total party of 45 people, two people actually made it higher than Everest Base Camp – myself and one other kept on till the summit of a black peak called Kala Patar, at over 5545m above sea level,” Bec said.

“What an adventure, and that outstanding rendition of Climb Every Mountain by the incredible people at Melbourne Sings really did get me to take the next step when times got tough. Which they did.”

Congratulations on a wonderful, inspirational adventure, Bec!
